There is no denying that we live in a digital age. Our children have technology at their fingertips at school, at home and in the various places they visit.
No matter who I speak to, everyone has a different opinion on children’s access to technology. The content that they are able to access. And the big one… SCREEN TIME! (so many opinions on that one).
how do we guide our children through a digital age?
But how do we guide our children through a digital age, whilst creating healthy digital habits for them? Honestly, I don’t think that there is a right or wrong answer. It is, like all parenting decisions, whatever works for you and your family life. However, technology brands such as Xbox are assisting parents with family settings, screen time management, content filters and privacy settings. Great news I’m sure you’ll agree.
How do you ensure your children are creating healthy digital habits?
When it comes to creating healthy digital habits for our children it starts as soon as they are able to access a piece of technology. Whether they have received a new Xbox for Christmas or their birthday. If they have reached the age when they get their first mobile phone or even just allowed to access a new app on their tablets etc.
As each new console, game, or app is introduced parents need to be having the conversations with their children about access, the content that they will be viewing, in-game purchases and of course, privacy and security – especially if they are going to be accessing in-game chat with other gamers.
Remembering that needs to a conversation not a lecture. It is not reading them the riot act about what they can and can’t do, when they can have screen time etc. It’s important to let them know that you are always there to listen and help with anything that they are not comfortable with. Be it content within a game, an app or even a line of chat that is moving in a different direction to chatting about the game they are playing.
Creating their own responsible gaming habits using xbox family settings
Many of the tools in the family setting on Xbox also provide kids with a way to play an active role in the development of their own responsible gaming habits. Including activity reports and the ‘Ask A Parent’ feature. When kids are a part of this process, it provides a collaborative and fun gaming experience for everyone.
