It’s back to school season! This can only mean one thing. Autumn is almost upon us. The nights will soon be drawing in sooner. We will be able to finally light our fires, enjoy a cup of something warm, and snuggle under an absolutely obligatory Instagrammable blanket.
All that’s missing from this idyllic set up is a killer box set or two keep us entertained over the forthcoming weeks.
Giving us so many hours of pleasure, we can properly invest in the storylines, the characterisation. Heck, let’s admit it, we get way too involved. But we love it. Who cares?
While OITNB, Stranger Things, and Walking Dead are so very popular across Sky, Netflix and Amazon right now. They’re not going to feature in my top three. Oh, no.
Before we begin, if you want to give something odd but addictive a go, ease yourself into box set mode with the eight-part standalone series, The End of the F***ing World.
Based on Charles Fosman’s graphic novel, this British dark comedy-drama is all about the relationship between a self-diagnosed psychopath, James, and his love/murder interest, Alyssa. It is oh-so weird, but oh-so-good, and oh-so-easy to steam through, with episodes lasting just 19 to 22 minutes.
No matter what you normally love to watch, here is some seriously good, easy-watch television to get stuck into.
Desperate Housewives
Following the daily lives of the Wisteria Lane housewives, this series peeks behind their perfect exterior to reveal the sometimes funny, sometimes deadly, reality.
From Gabrielle’s sly clinical negligence claim following the ideal death of her dreaded mother-in-law (amid her long-standing affair with the teen gardener) to old kind-hearted Karen McCluskey revealing that she likes to keep her dead husband nice and frosty in the freezer… it’s always a hell of a day in the neighbourhood.
Peaky Blinders
Who would have thought that a British BBC series could reach the global dizzy heights, as seen by Peaky Blinders?
With a stellar cast including Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Helen McCrory, you just know it’s going to be good. Set in 1920s Birmingham in the aftermath of World War I, the show follows the crimes of the Shelby family and its notorious gang, the Peaky Blinders.
Nurse Jackie
If you don’t have the time to invest into hour-long episodes, give Nurse Jackie a try.
The series stars Edie Falco – who you may recognise as Carmella, the devoted wife of Tony Soprano – as an opiate-addicted emergency room nurse. With believable characters and intense events, this medical comedy-drama makes for compulsive viewing.
For those of you who have some time on your hands and really want get your teeth stuck into some phenomenal television, you could commit to some box set greats. To get you started, here are five of the very best to try, you’ll love them no matter your genre preference:
