When it comes to organising family life, it can be a little overwhelming. Whether you have one child or a whole tribe of them, there are so many dates, appointments and activities to keep track of. Add to this work schedules and childcare requirements. Not to mention tracking insurance renewal dates, car servicing, and those all-important holiday dates.
Organising family life doesn’t have to send you into a mild state of panic as you suddenly realise you’ve missed another appointment. Setting up a family organisational area within the home can be done relatively easily and once in place will hopefully streamline all the families appointments and paperwork.
Location, Location, Location
Lets’ start with the basics, there is no point setting up an area in the home to manage appointments, schedules, and paperwork if it is in an area that you don’t frequently utilise. Your family organisation centre needs to be visible to you and the rest of the family. Whether this is in the hallway next to the coat and shoe racks, or in the kitchen next to the fridge.
All in one place
The easiest way to keep everything together in one place and to save it slowly spreading across to other areas is to install a noticeboard. Why not opt for a colourful one to brighten up the space and add a note of interest. Or maybe a dual noticeboard and whiteboard so you are able to leave messages and reminders.
Family Calendar
At the heart of any organisational plan is a calendar. This can be one that you have purchased or one that you have downloaded online. Just ensure that there is a column for each family member. Plus an additional one if possible for recording key dates such as birthdays and anniversaries. This calendar will become the main focus for recording activities, work schedules and appointments. You’ll be able to see at a glance where everyone is and whether there are any conflicts on that date.
Colour Coded
Purchase a multipack of coloured plastic wallets and assign each family member a colour. Then attach their corresponding coloured wallet to the noticeboard. This will then hold appointment cards, notices and invitations. Placing an additional wallet holding blank envelopes and stationery will make completing the calendar and responding to invitations and school letters easier (and more efficiently too).
Some training required
Whilst you might have now set up the perfect organisational system, it will only succeed if everyone plays their part. To ensure this you might want to drop hints, highlight key areas they need to pay attention to. Or better still sit them down and show off your latest pride and joy, give them the glare that should they not comply extra chores will be allocated.
