Removing stains from different types of flooring

April 11, 2017

You’ve got a lovely new floor, everything is perfect, and then; disaster strikes. A stain, a living nightmare…Well, we are here to tell you that it’s all going to be okay. Depending on what type of floor you have there are lots of methods available to remove stains.

Laminate

Generally, laminate flooring is really easy to maintain, all it requires is a sweep or simple mop with warm soapy water. But life isn’t always that simple is it? As many of us know, little ones can bring so much joy to your life, but with joy comes mess, lots and lots of mess.

Mud

If your laminate floor has any caked on mud or other stains that have caused it to become dull or faded then the cure may be easier than you think. White Vinegar. Yes, you read that correctly, white vinegar can be mixed with water to create a diluted solution to remove stains. Simply pour 60ml of white vinegar into a 940-1000ml spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with water, once filled shake well to combine the mix. Once the solution is mixed together spray it onto the floor in small areas and wipe almost immediately, DO NOT spray the entire floor with the solution at once as this can wear the protective coat of the laminate and damage your floor. Once you have sprayed the area, wipe the solution up with a damp mop or cloth, please make sure the material is of soft microfiber and avoid using anything abrasive. Please do not soak the floor in water, wring the mop of cloth before using, this prevents the floor from warping by letting moisture sit on it for too long. Once wiped, give the laminate a quick dry with another microfiber cloth, if you have only used a small amount of water in the first place then the floor should be fine to air dry.

Blood

Don’t panic! Yes, there is blood on your floor, but it’s all going to be okay. It’s pretty obvious but the quicker that you attend to a stain, the easier it will be to remove. Blood can be a bit of a nightmare on certain types of flooring but you’ll be shocked to know that with a little bit of window cleaner it is easily removed from laminate. Yes, Window Cleaner, who’d have thought it? Simply spray a small amount onto the affected area and wipe away immediately with a warm, partially damp cloth.

Nail Polish

Ladies, we are all guilty of thinking we’re invincible when it comes to painting our nails but everyone has an off day, right? If you have managed to get some nail polish on your floor, don’t worry, like superman and kryptonite, nail polish has nail polish remover! Simply add a small amount of nail polish to a microfiber cloth and scrub until the polish lifts from the floor. Once removed, wipe the floor with another cloth that has been soaked in clean water.

Porcelain Tiles

Tiles have seen a surge in popularity over recent years, even more so on kitchen floors. But being placed in a busy room like the kitchen, it’s inevitable that there will be some mishaps, so here’s what to do should any stains appear on your tiles:

Coffee

It may have happened a minute ago, it may have happened an hour ago, as with any stain the longer it is left, the worse it will get. If you have managed to spill some coffee and forgot about it then the chances are that it has left its mark on your tile, not to worry though! A simple solution to this is to sprinkle a little bit of baking soda over the stain itself and then gently scrub with a damp cloth.

Deep clean

For a more thorough clean for your porcelain tiles we can revert back to our old friend White Vinegar, depending on the area of your floor we would recommend adding about 30ml of white vinegar to 4.5 litres of warm water, mop/scrub the floor with the solution and then rinse with clean water and dry when finished. White vinegar should deodorise and disinfect the surface producing a deeper clean for your floor.

So there you have it, a few handy tips to get rid of any stubborn stains, using these on top of routine cleaning should help keep your floors sparkling!
