When it comes to seaside adventures on the northeast coast, there’s few to rival good ol’ Great Yarmouth. A little calmer, and slightly more collected, than other nearby seaside towns, such as Skegness and Scarborough, Great Yarmouth is a fab choice of ‘staycation’ for families with small children.
Expect all the usual Great British seaside resort goodness, from building sandcastles to promenade walks with fish and chips in hand. Chances are, if you hit the weather right, you will be able to fill plenty of days with free fun on Great Yarmouth’s many beaches. But that doesn’t mean you don’t want to sprinkle your sandy stay with some child-friendly local attractions too, right?
So, if you do manage to tear yourself away from Yarmouth’s shorelines, here are just five of Great Yarmouth’s best family-centred days out.
Great Yarmouth’s best family-centred days out
SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth
Located right on the seafront of Great Yarmouth, SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth is an absolute lifesaver if the skies open and your day on the sands is a write-off. Available for you whatever the weather, young children will adore exploring the wonders of underwater marine life at SEA LIFE. New for 2018 is the centre’s CLAWS & JAWS exhibition, featuring a ginormous a Japanese Spider Crab and a jaw-dropping Anglerfish model. You can also get up close to one of the ocean’s most feared predators, the beautiful but deceiving Peacock Mantis Shrimp.
Merrivale Model Village
For a chilled day out in Great Yarmouth, head over to the Merrivale Model Village. The award-winning landscaped gardens, water displays and mini Merrivale model architecture has been enjoyed by families for over 50 years. The attraction also features a small Thomas railway line, suitable for tots, and a uniquely authentic, Old Penny Arcade.
Hippodrome Circus
Built-in 1903 by legendary Circus showman George Gilbert, the Hippodrome Circus is the UK’s only surviving total circus building. Whether your visit to watch a show in the afternoon or an evening, this is a more than just some seaside entertainment, it’s an authentic glimpse of northeast British culture.
With a unique circus ring that fills with water to produce outstanding aqua displays, this is certainly a circus feat with a fantastical difference. Look online for information regarding season-specific showings and to book your tickets in advance.
Pleasure Beach
The Pleasure Beach Great Yarmouth is a summer fun steal, ideal for all the family. Once you have bought your wristband, you gain unlimited rides on all the park’s attractions, with non-riders not paying a penny. Aside: that’s all the ingredients for a cost-efficient day out. Whether you have toddlers who love the caterpillar coaster or adrenaline-junkie teens who can’t get enough of intense thrills such as Disko or Skydrop, Pleasure Beach offers great value, traditional seaside fun for all ages.
Jurassic Journey
Adventure back in time with your youngsters to a time when dinosaurs walked the earth. Jurassic Journey is a seafront attraction that features 12 animated dinosaurs, and countless other interactive exhibits and hands-on displays. Meet Professor Possilfossil and become assistant palaeontologists for the day, taking part in the Jurassic Journey scavenger hunt.
