While we are still smack dab in the middle of spring, it’s never too early to start thinking ahead, especially when it comes to planning your summer vacation. Hot vacation destinations in the country are notorious for booking up well in advance of the warm months, so now is actually an ideal time to plan and book your own spot.
There are all different types of vacation ideas within the US, but one that proves to be wildly popular with all age groups year in and year out is a lake-based holiday. Being able to get outdoors and enjoy all that lake living has to offer is what many would consider the “perfect” vacation. But what lakes are worth visiting in the country?
To help you narrow down the options, here’s a look at five must-visit lakes in the US.
Lake Placid, New York
If you are visiting New York state, Lake Placid is, of course, well-known as the ideal summer lake getaway. Not only do you have the lake to enjoy, but Lake Placid has played host to the Olympic Winter Games twice, which means it’s got an interesting history to take in. As for the actual activities you can do at Lake Placid, there are two lakes, one of which has a public sandy beach. There are plenty of water activities, marina, and more.
Lake McConaughy, Nebraska
Nebraska has its own offering with Lake McConaughy which is the state’s largest lake. The locals call it Lake Mac and it is just under four miles wide and 20 miles long. It’s known for its boating, fishing, and swimming. There is also a Visitors Center which is home to an aquarium, interactive exhibits, and a theatre. The lake has a welcoming environment perfect for families.
Lake Powell, Utah/Arizona
Then we have one of the more recognizable lakes in the US thanks to its appearance in the original Planet of the Apes and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle movies. In fact, Lake Powell has appeared in more than three dozen movies thanks to its unique scenery and environment.
This is a desert lake that is extremely popular with those who love house-boating. The lake spans 200 miles through southern Utah and into northern Arizona. Along the way, you can view more than 80 side canyons. As another bonus, this lake tends to stay relatively quiet, so you are often the only ones around. Be sure to get a recreational kayak that you can bring with you, as it will give you a whole other perspective of the landscape.
Lake Clark, Alaska
If you’re looking to make a long journey to a truly stunning destination, then Lake Clark, Alaska could be perfect. Sure, this may not be a hot-weather destination, but what Lake Clark offers is exceptional wildlife viewing. This one is a real adventure thanks to the fact that the lake itself is extremely secluded and can only be accessed by trekking through the bush in Alaska, flying in by a floatplane, or even arriving by dogsled if you visit in the winter. You are surrounded by thick boreal forests, snow-capped mountains, and white-water rivers all around you.
Crater Lake, Oregon
Then we’ve got Crater Lake in Oregon. This one has a really unique offering in that it’s perfect for those who love scuba diving. Here you’ll be able to dive in an actual flooded volcano. And if that’s not enough, it also happens to be the deepest lake in the whole country, and the ninth deepest in the entire world. The lake is an incredible 1,943 feet deep.
Other features include the underwater moss meadows, the amazing amount of fish and wildlife, and the lava formations. Visitors also comment on how clear the water is.
Enjoy a Lake Holiday
So, as you plan and prepare for your summer vacation, these fabulous lakes are a great option for those looking to stay within the country.
