The Peak District, as we all know, is a great place to visit all year round. Stunning scenery, miles of trails on which to cycle, walk and be at one with wildlife – it never gets boring. However, if you’re looking for something a bit different this winter, it’s worth thinking about jetting off to discover the beauty of Europe’s snow-capped regions.
Yes, getting out and about in pure white snow is possible in the Peak District, and when we do receive a dumping of the white stuff, it transforms the area completely. However, the sad fact is, snow – and we’re talking regular deep blankets of snow – isn’t guaranteed, and the opportunity to spend time exploring in a winter wonderland can often be missed.
That’s why it’s worth heading further afield to make absolutely sure you can wrap yourself in the joys that snowy landscapes bring. Below are some beautiful European destinations which guarantee snow, although aren’t necessarily dedicated to skiing and suchlike.
Now, many of the major resorts can also be a hotspot for loud après-ski activities, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. There are still some hidden gems – quieter places you can visit – meaning your tranquil strolls are less likely to be interrupted by those more interested in sampling the local brewing.
Before you decide where to go, it’s worth thinking about preparing for a smooth travel experience. Why suffer the stress of parking miles away from the airport and shoehorning yourself on a shuttle bus or paying exorbitant sums to ensure your car is within walking distance of the terminal.
By using Looking4.com to find a great deal, all you have to do is drive up to the terminal where a driver will meet you and whisk your car to secure parking. Upon your return, the driver will meet you at the terminal entrance allowing you to get back on the road immediately. It’s a great idea which saves a lot of time and energy.
On with the recommendations…
European destinations which guarantee snow
1. Italy
The Monterosa region is fairly unknown to those outside of Italy. It offers unparalleled scenery, several beautiful villages to explore and nearly 200km of skiing. The fact it hasn’t yet been discovered by the rest of Europe will make you feel as though you have been let in on a really big secret. Plus, it’s Italy, so you can be sure the food will be magnifico.
2. Slovenia
The country has become quite popular for extreme sports enthusiasts, but it also offers a plethora of more relaxing activities. Why not check into the Igloo village at Kranjska Gora in the Julian Alps? Beds are made from blocks of snow and temperatures rarely rise about freezing. But insulating material and sheepskins mean you can enjoy the experience in complete cosy comfort.
3. Lithuania
Druskininkai, near the border with Belarus, is home to mineral rich waters, which are said to relieve a range of ailments, including asthma. Relax in the waters as the snow falls and then wander round the area with new found vim and vigour. There is also great skiing on offer if that’s your bag.
